Poetry Pie Writing Challenge: Sunday
Everything you need for Sunday, 4/13
Tip #6
Haiku include a season word. In Japan, this is called kigo.
Season words are:
Associated with weather (tornado, thunderhead, rainbow).
The actual season’s name (spring, winter).
Associated with a season (vacation, bathing suit, mittens, fallen leaves, daffodil).
Associated with a place (beach, ski run, desert, water park).
Associated with nature (leaves, bloom, river).
Using a season word helps us stay connected to nature. Plus, it’s a concrete reminder of the time and place when you wrote your haiku.
Not all of my haiku have season words, but many do. It’s up to you.
Recently, I’ve learned about microseasons. In Japan, many people divide the seasons into two-week increments so there are seventy-two! Then, they notice what’s happening in that season and name them. If you’re interested in this, a great book is Light Rains Sometimes Fall by Lev Parikian. He has a Substack too!
Writing Prompt #6
Write a haiku with a season word.
Salt crashes on a sugary shore
White sand, blue green water
Gulf Shores welcome all
daffodils step down
deliberate, delicate
down the dark ditch bank
***
A glimpse in the woods as we drive by, a ditch or stream wandering through the woods
and trooping down the steep bank a row of bright daffodils.
