Hi Friends!
Even though we’ve been off the Colorado River for close to two weeks now, I can still hear the sound that of that magical current in my ears. I can feel myself flying through rapids. I can dream of sleeping beneath a sky so star dense that it didn’t seem real. I can try to recreate a totally disconnected-from-my-phone existence!
With all the fires, my heart is breaking for the Grand Canyon right now, but see my expression in the photo? Exuberant joy is what I felt for eight consecutive days and 277 miles in the canyon— except for the sandstorm night when we tried to sleep with nothing but a sarong over our heads!
I wrote about our last trip HERE. Ten years later, this trip still feels the same—a transformational journey in one of the most magnificent places on the planet! Feel free to email me with questions about Grand Canyon river trips. If you have any interest (and you’re the least bit outdoorsy), this is an experience you don’t want to miss.
The rest of our summer has been (or will be!) neighborhood parties, hosting family visits, obsessively organizing the house, a 40-year college reunion, beach trailer camping (hello Jalama!), and getting our girl ready to leave for college.
In the creative arts, I'm playing with slow stitching (check out this moon phase project brought to me by my fiber artist friend, Suzanne), a Grand Canyon travel journal, various zines and 1-Hour Retreats, meeting with my writing partner to discuss and move along our writing lives, and lots of reading (although watching Alone and Department Q may distract me).
So far, the second best book I’ve read is The Correspondent by Virginia Evans, but THE BEST book is Still Life by Sarah Winman. That’s why I selected it for the September Once-in-a-While Book Club meeting!
If you’re local, I hope you can join us on September 14th from 3:30 to 5 PM when we’ll gather around my dining room table in Rancho Palos Verdes to read this amazing book.
Email me (lorrietom@lorriet.com) if you’d like to attend. The first eight lovely humans get a spot at the table for what I know will be a gem of a conversation! You can get all the details HERE.
I’ll be back with regular Friday posts in late August when I officially become an empty-nester. For now, I’m enjoying family time away from screens for a wee bit longer. Please let me know how your summer is going with updates about creative pursuits that make your heart soar!
Always writing and reading,
Lorrie, your summer sounds restorative! Love the book recs and river pic and the update. 💚
